It's not particularly hard, I just wouldn't recommend taking Seton's French course. The book is not conducive to learning at all; I don't feel like I've really learned anything. The book gives gargantuan loads of vocabulary that you would rarely use again, and presents everything in a rather confusing way. The tests Seton gives are hard, and much of the questions are on things that were only a small percentage of the book. But honestly, that's just me, other people may feel differently about it.

Personally, I think that the French course can be hard, but then again, it depends on how you are at learning languages. It wasn't really hard for me. I am actually working on French II and that is better and more fun. I really disliked the vocabulary, but I have to say that I am using the vocabulary that I have learned. I guess, the vocabulary is probably one of the most important parts, because usually you can get your meaning across to a person by saying the thing you are talking about, even if you can't form complete, gramatically correct sentences. I thought that the tests were challenging, but definitely related to the course. I think they especially focused on getting you to know French grammar, not so much on the vocabulary, that was what the translation tests were for. It is necessary to know the gender of words though, because that is important to the grammatical structure. In my opinion, any homeschooling version of French, where you don't have an actual French teacher to correct your pronunciation and speak French with you, is going to be inadequate and challenging. I haven't used any other programs, so I don't know how they compare, but Seton seems like it gave me a basic understanding. If you really want to learn French, immerse yourself in French culture with people who speak French if you can. If not then I would recommend just checking around and seeing what program is the best. Seton is hard, especially if you don't do well at learning languages, but it did give me a basic understanding of French sentence structure, pronunciation, ( only basic pronunciation) and French words. I am now able to write basic sentences in French to some of my French speaking friends, but woe be to me if someone actually spoke to me in French. Seton doesn't help in that regard at all except being able to understand an occasional word.

That is my opinion, I hope it helps.

Just to add something I forgot: this was not the first language class I have taken. I took Spanish for eight years straight, and three years of Latin, so it's not like I'm bad at languages or anything. Idk, maybe I'm just burnt out on languages, or something.

Haha! Probably with a little brushing up, I could be somewhat fluent, but I definately couldn't keep up with people who have it as their first language (they talk so fast!).

Yes, I think those who speak English naturally speak slow, even when speaking another language. If you've heard this one song that Gene Kelly sings in "An American in Paris," I was amused because I could understand his American version of French - but not a Frenchman's French song, like "Le Swing Cajun" by L'Angelus.

I've seen L'Angelus face to face and I've heard Le Swing Cajun...creepy. They even sang a song dedicated to my mom and dad in Gaeilge! 8) 8) btw, Stephen isn't French :| :|

I have always wanted to learn to speak French, my grandparents are fluent and my mom barely knows it. I guess I could pick it up faster if I moved to Quebec.lol
A priest of ours would go to Quebec every year during his childhood for a week and now he is fluent!
